India LNG Consumption Up 36% in August from Power Sector Demand

Indian LNG consumption was up 36% year on year in August according to ICIS. The increase was primarily driven by the highest LNG demand since 2020 from the power sector.

  • Imports in September reached the highest since 2021 but the risk of approaching tank-top may dampen intake for Q4 according to ICIS. August LNG imports into India were up by 9.3% on the year to 2.23bcm according to oil ministry data.
  • Indian LNG imports fell in the week to 1 Oct by 0.6m tons from the 2023 peak the previous week and several spot tenders did not get awarded last week according to Bloomberg.
