INDONESIA: Prabowo Holds Informal Meeting With Ministerial Candidates

INDONESIA

Bloomberg runs a headline suggesting that Indonesia's President-elect Prabowo Subianto has convened a meeting with possible ministerial candidates at his residence. Kompas had earlier reported that Prabowo will announce the line-up of his cabinet on Sunday (October 20) evening, after officially taking office as Indonesian President and before the cabinet's inauguration on Monday (October 21).

  • Gerindra Party Daily Chair Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed that "that's the plan, inviting ministerial candidates who yesterday signed their willingness to help," adding that the candidates would meet directly with Prabowo, after which the cabinet line-up would be finalised.
  • Andi Rahmad Wijaya, Secretary General of Prabowo's Gerindra Party, had earlier said that many ministers from the outgoing Jokowi administration will return when Prabowo assumes office. The official had told Kompas TV that "the majority of Mr Jokowi's cabinet will be members of Mr Prabowo's cabinet."
  • It is expected that the cabinet will have around 46 ministries, although the final number is yet to be confirmed. According to Jakarta Globe, this will include 41 sectoral ministries and five coordinating ministries, which would be an increase by 11 sectoral ministreis and one coordinating ministry compared with the outgoing cabinet.
  • Sources told Reuters that the incoming head of state is considering inviting Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati to join his cabinet. One source said that "there must be a name that has international reputation in [Prabowo's] cabinet." Separately, Kumparan.com reported that Indrawati was "almost certain" to be given the portfolio.
