IRAN: FM Says Tehran Ready To Restart Nuclear Talks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has posted a video on social media claiming that Tehran would be interested in restarting talks on 'the nuclear issue' in the clearest sign yet of an attempted course correction by the administration of President Masoud Pezeshkian. In New York City for the upcoming UNGA , Araghchi said that "Our aim is to start a new round of negotiations on the nuclear issue. We are ready for this, and if our counterparts are also ready, we could even see a resumption of talks during this visit...Messages [b/w Iran and the JCPOA partners] have been exchanged, and publicly we have expressed our readiness [to talk]. But the current state of affairs is such that restarting the nuclear talks has become more difficult than ever."
- The minister said he will not meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during this visit, claiming that “I do not believe it would be expedient to hold such a dialogue...there is currently no suitable ground for that. We are still a long way from holding direct talks.”
- Previously, Oman acted as an interlocutor between the US and Iran during indirect talk. In July Iran claimed these were ongoing while the US refused to comment.
- The appointment of Araghchi and Deputy for Strategic Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif following the election was seen as a sign that Peszeshkian was inclined to seek dialogue, given the two are seen as key figures in the creation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015.
