Iraq’s 140kbpd Karbala Refinery Struggles To Reach Full Capacity

OIL

Iraq’s planned 140kbpd Karbala refinery has struggled to reach full capacity amid technical difficulties that shut down the facility in June according to bne IntelliNews.

  • Corrosion found at a heat exchanger near Karbala’s CDU meant the plant needed to be shut down in June while all the exchangers were replaced.
  • The refinery has since then restarted and it is expected to reach 100% of capacity very soon, owner Midlands Refining Company said in July.
  • Argusmedia reported in February commercial operations at the refinery will be delayed to H2 2023, from March previously scheduled. The facility was expected to reach full capacity by July.
