ISRAEL: Netanyahu-'Unthinkable' US Has Withheld Weapons From Israel

ISRAEL

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has posted a video to social media regarding US weapon supplies to Israel where he is seemingly critical of the Biden administration's halting of some supplies amid Israel's assault on Rafah. Netanyahu says he held 'frank' discussions with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, adding "I said that it was unthinkable that in recent months the administration had withheld weapons and ammunition from Israel.[...] Secretary Blinken has assured me that the administration is working day and night to remove these bottlenecks. I sure hope that's the case. This should be the case. [...]" Unconfirmed reports claim that Blinken has pledged to remove all restrictions on weapons exports in the coming days.

  • Netanyahu remains in a difficult political position domestically following the dissolution of the war cabinet. He is reliant on the support of ultranationalists within his governing coalition, who are in favour of continuing the Gaza operation until Hamas' destruction. Netanyahu has talked of the elimination of Hamas as a governing force as something of a compromise, but it is unclear whether this will be enough to keep the hardliners on side.
  • Opinion polling shows that should the gov't collapse, Netanyahu would likely lose any subsequent snap election.
