The Washington Post is reporting that, according to an unnamed US official Israel is planning to launch a "Israel is planning a limited ground operation in Lebanon that could start imminently,[...]. Israel’s planned campaign would be smaller than its last war against Hezbollah in 2006 and would focus on clearing out militant infrastructure along the border to remove the threat to Israeli border communities," An Israeli familiar with the matter told WaPo “Israel has plans for a limited operation that will be imminent. They are in line with the Americans. The understanding is that they are not going to do another Gaza,”
- Following on from the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on 27 Sep, Israeli special forces are believed to have carried out raids on Lebanese territory as part of an intel gathering operation and in order to test Hezbollah's defences. Reports claim that any ground op will be focused on destroying missile and rocket-launching facilities before a withdrawal back across the border.
- Of course, it remains to be seen whether such a plan comes to fruition or if a more staunch resistance by Hezbollah results in a larger ground operation. There also remains the risk of the direct involvement of other regional powers, namely Iran, in the conflict should Israeli forces move across the border en masse.
