Israeli PM UAE Visit Cancelled Amid Jordan Issues, Wife Hospitalisation

MIDEAST

After much back-and-forth its been officially announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned trip to the UAE today has been cancelled.

  • The cancellation comes as Netanyahu's wife is hospitalised with appendicitis, but also amidst a diplomatic row with neighbouring Jordan.
  • Yesterday reports emerged that the Jordanian Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah had been denied access to Israel yesterday to visit the Temple Mount due to his security detail being too large.
  • Today, Jordan denied access to its airspace to Netanyahu's plane, making the trip difficult-to-impossible given that without travelling over Jordan the Israeli PM's plane would have to travel across Syria or Egypt's Sinai peninsula, both viewed as too dangerous.
  • Jordan can expect to be on the receiving end of significant criticism and potentially political retaliation from other MidEast states seeking to normalise relations with Israel for its role in halting Netanyahu's trip.
