Italy PM: EU Commission Should Set Limit On Gas Prices

At a meeting of southern European heads of gov't, Italian PM Mario Draghi states that he believes there should be a limit set on gas prices by the European Commission.

  • Also says that joint gas purchases and storage is in the interest of the entire EU. Says "We must intervene immediately, there is a feeling in all of us that something substantial needs to be done. We must support the purchasing power of households and our businesses",
  • Draghi held meeting with Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez, Portuguese PM Antonio Costa, and Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis on southern European energy and defence issues.
  • Draghi on defence: "We have confirmed full convergence on the role of the Strategic Compass, as a contribution to the path towards European defence. Stronger European defence makes NATO stronger. In the coming years, Europe has significant investments in defence, energy and the environment. Expenditure is too large for any national budget."
