Japan Dec Household Spending -0.6% y/y; 1st Drop in 3 Months

  • Average monthly spending by Japanese households with two or more people decreased 0.6% y/y in December, reversing the 1.1% gain in the previous month.
  • Spending on food stayed flat after a 1.7% increase in the prior month.
  • Spending on fuel, lighting and water rose 2.9% y/y, sharply slower than the 10.6% gain registered in November.
  • The average real income of households with salaried workers fell 0.3% y/y in December, lower than the 0.6% y/y gain reported last month.
  • Household spending rose 0.9% in December from November, compared with the previous -1.8% m/m.
