JAPAN-ROK: Blinken Meets Virtually With Counterparts Ahead Of Leaders Summit

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is currently meeting virtually with Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin ahead of a key trilateral summit between President Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at Camp David, Maryland, on Friday.

  • Blinken will deliver remarks to the press at 11:30 ET 16:30 BST.
  • The three leaders are expected to make the leaders summit a yearly event and outline plans for expanded military and economic cooperation.
  • The Wall Street Journal reports: "National-security advisers from the three nations are set to meet twice a year, and a hotline for the three leaders is in the works."
  • President Yoon said in a televised address today: “The ROK-U.S.-Japan summit to be held at Camp David in three days will set a new milestone in trilateral cooperation..."
  • An institutionalisation of bilateral ties between Japan and South Korea that can outlive the terms of the current three leaders would be a major foreign policy win for President Biden and secure a key plank of the Biden’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
