US VIEW
US VIEW: Jefferies economists Ward McCarthy and Tom Simons said that "with
Congress now back in session for 2018, it is important to look out for
developments on two issues that were left unresolved in 2017. First, the
government is currently being funded by a continuing resolution (CR) that
extends through January 19th, 2018. If Congress does not pass a budget or
another CR before then, there will be a government shutdown. We have not seen
any evidence to suggest that there are groups in Congress that want to force a
shutdown, but we also have not seen any evidence that lawmakers are making this
issue a priority."
- They add that "the most likely outcome is that we get another short-term CR
that extends funding until a later date rather than a full budget that funds the
government through the end of the fiscal year. It would not be surprising to see
a CR extend to Jan. 31st when Senate Majority Leader McConnell has set a
deadline for a vote on immigration, or to March 5th when Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals (DACA) permits begin to expire."
