JKM Spot LNG Prices Boosted by Early Summer Heat in South Asia

LNG

Spot LNG prices in Asia are boosted by early summer heat in South and Southeast Asian countries, raising power demand and consumption of generation fuels.

  • Countries such as India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam are experiencing heat waves forcing regulators to issue warnings of power outages. Power utilities are searching to shore up emergency fuel supplies and increasing inflows of spot LNG cargoes.
  • LNG prices have risen back above $10/mmbtu at the start of May with the demand setting a floor on LNG prices and market sentiment, according to S&P Global.
  • A strong impact is expected with higher coal and gas-fired power generation while the wet season is still a few weeks away.
  • Hot summer conditions are expected to spread further east in the coming weeks and become more intense before subsiding.
