JPM: Reddit Users Not Representative Of Overall Retail Investor Base

EQUITIES

Monday saw J.P.Morgan note that U.S. "retail activities were very elevated in January, and, towards the end of the month, captured some of the highest market shares relative to history in terms of shares traded. Moreover, the retail demand for stocks in January is the second highest in the last 12 months, only slightly behind Oct 2020. On a handful of reportedly popular 'Reddit' names, we found strong buying pressure by retail traders. However, in some other names, retail appeared to be net sellers. This suggests to us that Reddit users are likely not the sole driving factor of the price volatility, and their behaviour is not representative of the overall retail investor base."
