Former environment minister Shinjiro Koizumi is set to run for the leadership of the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), with TBS News reporting that the son of former PM Junichiro Koizumi, "has informed his close legislators of his intention. He has already secured the 20 sponsors necessary to run, and is making arrangements to hold a press conference next week or later." An unnamed source told TBS "There are already more than 40 legislators from all factions who have declared their support [for Koizumi]."
- Japan analyst Tobias Harris posts on X: "If Shinjiro has this much support from lawmakers already -- and is poised to take a big chunk of the LDP supporters' votes -- I don't see how he doesn't at least make it to the runoff."
- Kyodo News polling on 19 August put Koizumi in first place among LDP supporters (albeit in second behind former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba among all voters).
- Earlier today the LDP confirmed that the election to replace PM Fumio Kishida as LDP president will take place on 27 September. Digital Minister Taro Kono, who came second to Kishida in the 2021 contest, is set to announce his candidacy in a presser on 26 Aug.
