Kremlin-'We Know Sanctions Will Last For Years'; Affirms OPEC+ Support

RUSSIA

Wires carrying comments from Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov. On sanctions, claims that the "US is trying to break the entire [global] trade system in order to destroy the Russian economy." Comes after an FT article that quotes US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt stating that western sanctions on Russia must be maintained "for years to come." Peskov says that "We already knew that western sanctions will last for many years."

  • On OPEC+ Peskov states that "OPEC+ contributes into stabilisation of energy markets, creation of conditions for supporting energy prices at a balanced level." Affirms that "Russia is interested in continuation of working with OPEC+".
  • Peskov's comments on lengthy sanctions comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gives an interview to AP in which he laid some of the blame for the slow progress of his forces' summer counteroffensive at the feet of western partners, stating "We didn’t get all the weapons we wanted, I can’t be satisfied..."
  • The prospects of any notable shift in the conflict over the coming months are slim, with the onset of winter likely to further entrench already well-set lines on the battlefield.
