Large Gatherings, Worship Services Banned In Greater Seoul

SOUTH KOREA

The South Korean gov't has banned all large gatherings and worship services involving physical contact following a spike in COVID-19 cases in the city linked to churches.

  • As of August 17, South Korea has recorded five consecutive days of three-figure new case loads for the first time since March 9.
  • The Sarang Jeil Church, whose lead pastor is a vocal critic of President Moon Jae-in, has been identified as a source of a major outbreak cluster in Seoul after many of its followers attended non-permitted anti-government demonstrations in the capital.
  • South Korea has proved extremely effective in containing the virus so far, with 15,761 recorded cases as of August 17, much lower than many of its East Asian peers and far lower than other nations with similar populations in the West.
