GERMANY: Latest opinion poll from the state of Thuringia shows tanking support
for the centre-right CDU and pro-business FDP in aftermath of local political
furore that claimed national CDU leader's head.
- CDU on 14% support, down from 22% in Oct-19 regional election. Far-left Die
Linke up to 40%, from 31% in election. Far-right AfD also benefiting, up to 25%
from 23% in Oct. Linke, Social Democrats, and Greens would have majority if
polls reflected in any snap election.
- Furore surrounded CDU and FDP deputies voting alongside AfD in election of
Thuringia's minister president, sparking major criticism from political
opponents.
- Led to resignation of CDU national chair Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. Whoever
takes over from her is set to run for the position of Chancellor at next federal
election (due by Oct 2021).
