League, FdI Voters Happiest With Draghi Gov't; PD & 5-Star Prefer Conte

ITALY

Latest SWG poll shows voters on the right happier with the potential of a technocratic gov't under former ECB chief Mario Draghi, while those on the left would have preferred Giuseppe Conte remained in place.

  • All voters: Which of the following positions do you most agree with? - I prefer that the new government be entrusted to Mario Draghi: 42%, I would have preferred that the forces of the previous majority had found an agreement for a new Conte gov't : 37 %
  • League Voters: Prefer Draghi: 55%, Prefer Conte: 11%, Don't Know: 34%
  • Brothers of Italy (FdI) Voters: Draghi: 73%, Conte: 9%, Don't Know: 18%
  • Democratic Party (PD) Voters: Draghi: 32%, Conte: 65%, Don't Know: 3%
  • 5-Star Voters: Draghi: 12%, Conte: 85%, Don't Know: 3%
  • Fieldwork 3-5 Feb, 800 respondents
  • Polling perhaps not a surprise. A technocratic Draghi gov't takes power away from the leftist coalition of PD and 5-Star led by Conte and gives it to the apolitical Draghi. Also ensures that there is a snap election on the horizon once the Draghi gov't has fulfilled its purpose in steering Italy through the COVID-19 crisis.
