Leftist Holds Narrow Lead In Pres Polls As Convention Election Approaches

Latest opinion poll continues to show far-left Communist Party of Chile candidate Daniel Jadue with a narrow lead in the early stages of the run-up to the presidential election in November.

  • Chile, Cadem/Plaza Pública poll: Jadue (PCCh, left): 18% (+1), Lavín (UDI, conservative): 15% (+4), Matthei (UDI, conservative): 12% (+1), Sichel (Ind, conservative): 9%, Kast (PLR, right): 9%. (+/- vs. 10-12 Feb '21) Fieldwork: 3-5 Mar '21. Sample size: 705
  • The immediate focus in Chilean politics is the election to the constitutional convention due to take place on 11 April. Voters are set to elect 138 of the 155 convention members who will draft a new constitution following mass protests against inequality in 2019.
  • The presidential opinion polls are likely to change around markedly in the coming months as parties settle on their chosen candidates to succeed incumbent President Sebastian Pinera.
