LNG: Asia LNG Imports Share Rises to 60% in July: ICIS

The Asian share of global LNG imports rose to 60% in July and the highest since Jan 2022, according to ICIS. Europe’s share fell 3 percentage points to the lowest since September 2021 at 17%.

  • Imports for China, Japan, South Korea, India and Taiwan rose by 4.9% m/m to 19.6m tonnes to the highest monthly volumes since April and compared to the 2021-2023 average for the month of 18.7m tonnes.
  • China imports rose 3.4% m/m to 6.1m tonnes but were down 1.6% y/y.
  • European imports fell 13% m/m to 5.7m tonnes to the lowest since October 2021 and compared to the 2021-2023 average for the month of 6.9m tonnes.
  • Spain rose to become the largest importer in Europe at 1.1m tonnes above Netherlands at 1m and France at 0.9m tonnes.
  • The South American imports to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia rose to 0.9m tonnes and the highest share since July 2022 at 3%.
