LNG: China to Remain Main Global LNG Buyer in 2024 and 2025: IEA

LNG

China is set to remain the main global buyer of LNG in 2024 and 2025 due strong industrial demand, said Keisuke Sadamori at IEA.

  • Falling Japanese demand amid nuclear reactor restarts, rising renewable energy and weak economic development enabled China to surpass Japan as the main global buyer last year.
  • China natural gas demand rose around 10% in Jan – Aug 2024 and expected to grow by 16% by 2025 from 2023 driven mainly by industrial sectors, Sadamori said.
  • "Strong domestic demand growth is set to drive up China's energy imports to new record highs, both in 2024 and 2025, solidifying its position as the world's largest LNG market," Sadamori said.
  • India gas demand is estimated to rise by nearly 9% in 2024 and 8% in 2025 amid rising power demand and strong transport industry gas consumption.
