LNG: Dutch Minister Seeks Russian LNG Sanctions Discussion Amid Rising Imports

LNG

Russian LNG imports to the GATE import terminal in the Netherlands have increased in recent months highlighting the need to discuss further sanctions at the next EU ministers meeting on Oct. 15, according to Dutch Energy minister Sophie Hermans cited by Reuters.

  • Imports of Russian LNG at the GATE terminal have doubled to two per month during Q3 2024, the government said.
  • New sanctions from earlier this summer could have influenced imports with an EU ban on the throughput of Russian LNG but not on the import to EU.
  • The ban has likely shifted trading routes to terminals with sufficient capacity, such as the one in Rotterdam, Hermans said in a letter to parliament.
  • "We want to responsibly cut Russian gas imports, and this development is therefore worrying and undesirable," Hermans said. "A common European approach is crucial."
  • Hermans said she would aim at getting further sanctions on the agenda of the council of government leaders.  She also expects the European Commission to clarify how individual nations can implement targeted measures.
