LNG

LNG futures traded volumes on the financial exchanges in Q4 hit a new record, according to Platts, citing exchange and broker data.

  • A total of 182,971 lots were traded, surpassing the previous record in Q3 2023 of 164,748 lots.
  • Across the whole of 2023, LNG traded volumes on ICE and CME rose 12.47% on the year to 636,607 lots, equivalent to 122.4m mt or 1929 cargoes, Platts added.
  • Open interest for LNG futures in 2023 fell 10.6% year on year to 935,167 lots.
  • Futures trading saw a fall in December, however, falling 36.6% on the month and 49.9% on the year to 41,843 lots.
  • Demand in APAC has fallen, despite a cold snap, with little buying interest from China.
  • However, some second-tier companies bought cargoes in Dec as falling prices made LNG more competitive vis a vis pipeline gas.
