LNG: Japan LNG Stocks Rise but Could See Downward Pressure as Heat Returns

LNG stockpiles held by Japanese utilities increased 6.82% w/w to 2.35m tons in the week to July 21 from 2.2m tons the previous week, according to data released by the trade ministry.

  • Storage is 21.1% above levels a year earlier of 1.94m tons and above the five year average for the end of July.
  • Storage changes are showing a fairly good correlation with temperatures with more normal temperatures after intense heat in the first week of July, according to ICIS.
  • Storage could see downward pressure in the next two weeks amid surging power demand this week. Intense heat returned since last Friday and is forecast to last into early August.
