LNG: Mexico’s First LNG Export Cargo Reaches Panama Canal

The LNG tanker carrying the first cargo from New Fortress’ 1.4m mtpa Altamira LNG export terminal offshore northern Mexico arrived at the Panama Canal Aug. 27, Platts said.

  • The cargo is being delivered to an import terminal in La Baz, Baja California Sur on the Mexico’s Pacific Coast which is isolated from national power and gas grids.
  • Altamira LNG utilises feedgas from the US by using some of the underutilised pipeline capacity on the 2.6 Bcf/d Sur de Texas-Tuxpan marine pipeline.
  • The facility is still limited in where it can ship LNG because it is among projects caught in the US DoE’s pause on issuing export permits to countries not already in free trade agreements with the US.
