LNG: Southeast Asian LNG Hits 10-Month Low Vs JKM: Platts

LNG

The Southeast Asian LNG marker fell to its widest discount vs JKM, as strong selling interest after a period of higher prices adds pressure, Platts said.

  • Platts assessed the DES Southeast Asian marker for November at $13.625/MMBtu Sep. 2, a 37.1 cents/MMBtu discount to JKM. This is the widest discount since Oct. 23.
  • Weakness in the Southeast Asian market was further intensified by strong selling interest.
  • Platts expects Thailand’s LNG demand to decline on the year in 2024. However, the gap could be small amid the El Nino weather phenomenon, causing hotter and drier conditions and increasing power demand.
  • The Southeast Asian region’s demand for spot LNG cargoes in seasonal and highest in Q2.
  • Imports in Southeast Asia - Thailand, Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam - hit 1.6m mt in August, down from 2.01m mt in July.
  • Imports for 2024 to date are 14.07m mt, compared to 11.51m mt in 2023.
