Manufacturing PMI Signals Softer Downturn

SPAIN DATA
MNI (London)

SPAIN DEC MANUF. PMI 46.4 (FCST 46.0); NOV 45.7

Spain recorded a 0.7-point improvement in the December manufacturing PMI, signalling a softer year-end contraction at 46.4. This was the softest contraction since September.

Highlights from the press release:

  • New orders continue to fall at a sharp pace, albeit less severely.
  • Employment stabilised after declining for five months. This was in part due to a rebound in optimism as firms interpreted the current economic situation to be largely beyond the worst.
  • Price pressures continued to ease across both input and charging prices.
  • Coming up: Italy is expected to see manufacturing inch up from November levels of 48.4, signalling a continued soft downturn. French, German and Eurozone final PMIs should largely confirm flash estimates, implying modest improvements to signal shallower contractions for the eurozone in December.
