Mapisa-Nqakula Resigns As Speaker & MP, Hands Herself Over To Police

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula resigned as member and head of the National Assembly with immediate effect after a court declined to interdict her arrest, but she insisted that it did not amount to an admission of guilt. Local media outlets reported that she arrived at the Lyttelton police station this morning to hand herself over. Her resignation comes less than two months ahead of national and provincial elections, in which the ruling African National Congress (ANC) risks losing its parliamentary majority for the first time in South Africa's post-apartheid history. The Daily Maverick ran an opinion piece noting that the Speaker's resignation spares the ANC having to defend her in a no-confidence debate.
  • The Johannesburg High Court ordered the ANC to hand over unredacted cadre deployment documents to the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA). The DA is looking to expose the ANC's cadre deployment policy as it accuses the party of state capture and corruption.
  • S&P Global will release South Africa's March PMI reading at 08:15BST/09:15SAST. Electricity consumption/production data for February will cross the wires at 12:00BST/13:00SAST.
  • Eskom said that loadshedding will remain suspended until further notice after non-implementation for over a week.
