Marathon’s Catlettsburg Refinery Cut Rates Due to Shut Lock

REFINING

Marathon’s 291kb/d Catlettsburg refinery in northeastern Kentucky cut run rates by as much as 38% due to a shut lock on the Ohio River according to a Bloomberg source.

  • The facility had been running above 100% of daily capacity.
  • The auxiliary chamber of a lock was temporarily shut over the weekend due to storm debris from high water. The debris has since been cleared. The main chamber had been shut since December.
  • The refinery uses the Ohio River to transport crude feedstock and to send out gasoline and diesel to Chicago and NY Harbor markets.
  • The Catlettsburg refinery has two crude units of roughly equal size and processes sweet and sour crude oils into gasoline, distillates, asphalt, natural gas liquids and petrochemicals, propane and heavy fuel oil.
