McCarthy On Track To Lose Seventh Speaker Ballot - Gaetz Votes For Trump

US

Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) appears on track to lose a seventh consecutive ballot to become Speaker of the House of Representatives.

  • An intense night of negotiating and a package of concessions provided by McCarthy to rebel Republican appears to have done little to win over a group of hardcore conservative Republicans calling for McCarthy to withdraw from the race.
  • One of the key Republican rebels Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) voted for former President Donald Trump, the first time Trump's name has been thrown into the equation and, as he was not formally nominated, the vote will be recorded as "other."
  • With the vote ongoing, observers will be watching closely to see if any of the 20 GOP rebels have switched their vote.
  • An eight ballot will follow directly after the conclusion of the current vote unless McCarthy decides to push for a recess. For this he will need a majority vote which is unlikely with Democrat whipping against a recess.
