Middle East Instability a Risk but German Gas Supply Secure: E.ON

Gas supply to Germany this winter is secure but instability in the Middle East is a risk with reliance on LNG supplies from the Gulf according to E.ON.

  • Some shipping companies are rerouting vessels due to the risk of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
  • "If there is an escalation, that would have an impact on all energy markets," CEO Leonhard Birnbaum said to the Rheinische Post newspaper. "They are more interwoven than before: not only the oil price, but also gas and electricity prices. The Persian Gulf is the central route for oil and LNG."
  • The gas supply situation is far better than last winter with full storage and lower LNG purchases from China. "It would take a lot for there to be gas shortages this winter,"
  • There was no prospect of Germany's decommissioned nuclear plants ever being reactivated, Birnbaum added.
