MNI BRIEF: BOJ Kataoka: Cannot See Condition to Hit 2% Target

TOKYO (MNI)

Bank of Japan board member Goushi Kataoka said on Wednesday that it is very difficult to predict the conditions in which Japan's key consumer prices would increase by 2% through a rise in inflation expectations and a supply-demand gap.

Inflation expectations have been falling since late 2019 and the underlying trend of prices is falling moderately, Kataoka told business leaders in Maebashi City via an online meeting.

Kataoka also said that he cannot predict if the output gap would turn positive and inflation expectations rise on the back of a moderate economic recovery but with ongoing risks of pandemic outbreaks.
