MNI BRIEF: Canada GDP Inflation Shows Fastest Rise Since 1982

(MNI) Ottawa

Canada's latest GDP figures showed inflation gained the most last year since 1982 by one measure, going back even further in the record books than the latest CPI report showing the strongest gain since 1991.

The GDP's "implicit price index", tracking the overall cost of domestically produced goods and services, rose 1.6% in the fourth quarter to bring the gain over 2021 to 8.2%, Statistics Canada said Tuesday. That compares with CPI that rose 5.1% in January from a year earlier. Record gains for exported products such as crude oil and construction costs led the gains in the implicit price index, and supply chain frictions were also a factor.
