MNI BRIEF: EU Parl't To Grill EC On Poland, Hungary RRF Plans

BRUSSELS (MNI)

The EU Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee will grill EU Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis and Economic Affairs Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni later Wednesday on the lack of progress in approving Poland and Hungary's national recovery plans. Ferber MEP – leader of the parliament's biggest political bloc - issued a statement, calling on the Commission to get a move on and pressuring them to use the new Rule of Law mechanism to sanction the countries if necessary.

"While many Member States have already received pre-financing, Poland and Hungary's respective plans are still on hold. The European Commission must put their cards on the table," he said. Either the problems with the plans are technical, in which case they "can surely be ironed out", Ferber said.

"If there are rule of law concerns, then there is no reason for the Commission to hold back the application of the newly established rule of law instrument."
