MNI BRIEF: Eurozone Inflation Accelerates, At 13-yr high

(MNI) London

Eurozone inflation surged to its highest level in over a decade last month, rising 0.5% between August and September, reaching an annual rate of 3.4%, the fastest pace of growth since September 2008. Energy prices accounted for much of the acceleration, rising by 1.3% in September, or by 17.4% at an annual pace. Excluding energy, food alcohol and tobacco, prices rose by a more subdued 0.5% last month, or by an annual rate of 1.9%, Eurostat said Friday.

Despite the rise, which was in line with expectations, ECB President Christine Lagarde has taken a more relaxed approach toward rising prices than leaders of other developed-world central banks. Lagarde has repeatedly stressed that eurozone inflation is forecast to retreat to well below the ECB's 2.0% inflation target next year.
