MNI BRIEF: Eurozone To Avoid Recession In 2023-Centeno

(MNI) ROME

The eurozone as a whole will avoid recession in 2023, though some member countries will see declines in output, Bank of Portugal’s Governor Mario Centeno told an event in Lisbon on Friday.

While Centeno noted that the EZ economy has constantly “beaten growth expectations” in the last three years, he also pointed to confidence indicators which have been low for an extended period. (See MNI INTERVIEW: Need Strong ECB Hikes For Early CPI Win -Kazaks)

Asked which eurozone countries most concern him, the governor replied that eastern European nations are facing “fragilities linked to the war” including questions over energy supplies.
