MNI BRIEF: Hong Kong PMI Contracts For Third Month In November

MNI (Beijing)

Hong Kong’s manufacturing activity contracted for a third month in November despite the easing of Covid restrictions, as firms said weaker demand led to reduced inventories and employment, according to the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI released on Monday.

November’s PMI was 48.7 index points, down from 49.3 points in October. Index results above 50 indicate an expansion of the manufacturing sector compared to the previous month, while below 50 shows a contraction. The two biggest PMI components, output and new orders, recorded steeper contractions in November.

Companies noted input costs rose by the quickest rate in eight months due to higher purchase prices and wage inflation. Hong Kong’s GDP in Q3 contracted by 4.5% y/y, according to a recent government report.
