Japan's average unemployment rate stood at a seasonally-adjusted 2.9% in January, down from December's 3.0%, data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Tuesday showed.

The total number of employed rose 110,000 (+0.2%) m/m in January, after falling 10,000 in December, and the number of unemployed fell 70,000 (-3.3%) from the previous month after rising 50,000 in December.

The job-to-applicant ratio, a leading indicator of the employment market, stood at 1.10 in January, up from 1.05 in December, for the first rise in two months, according to data released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
