MNI BRIEF: Lockdown Keeps UK Shop Prices Low in Feb: BRC

LONDON (MNI)

UK shop prices continued to fall in February, led by non-food prices, as the third lockdown limits consumer spending across all income brackets, Helen Dickinson, OBE, Chief Executive from the BRC said. "Meanwhile, despite Brexit-related costs, food inflation remained steady thanks to fierce competition between grocers to maintain their market share amidst declining incomes for some UK households" she added.

"However, consumers could face higher prices in the future as a result of rising global food prices, shipping costs, and Brexit red tape," Dickinson added.

The BRC-Nielsen shop price index decreased by 2.4% year-on-year in February, its lowest level since May 2020. Food inflation remained at January's 0.2%, the lowest rate since January 2017.
