MNI BRIEF: US Feb CPI Rises Most Since July But Core Misses

U.S. CPI advanced 0.4% (0.3555% unrounded) in February, the biggest gain since July, following a 0.3% increase in January. Excluding food and energy, CPI increased 0.1% (0.101% unrounded) after a flat reading in January, a tenth below expectations.

Higher gas prices accounted for over half of the headline rise, which now stands at 1.7% yoy. In the core index, gains in shelter, recreation, medical care, and motor vehicle insurance were offset by lower prices in airline fares, used cars and trucks, and apparel. Some analysts had expected rebounds in airfares and apparel to boost the core index.

Inflation is set to rise in the months ahead on base effects and stronger oil prices and the February data will come as no surprise to Fed policymakers.
