MNI BRIEF: Snow Sends US Sales Sliding To Lowest Since April

MNI (Washington)
WASHINGTON (MNI)

U.S. retail sales growth plummeted in February, falling 3% when financial markets had expected a decline of just 0.5%. The fall, at the fastest since April when monthly sales growth bottomed out at -14.7%, was largely due to the adverse weather across much of the country. January's increase was revised higher to 7.6% (prev +5.3%), which weighed on the Feb m/m comparison..

Vehicle sales dipped 4.2% following a 5% increase in January. Excluding motor vehicle sales, retail sales were down 2.7%. Meanwhile, gas station sales saw relative strength through the month, growing 3.6% and excluding gas station sales, retail sales were down 3.5%.

Nearly every other category saw month-over-month declines in February, save for food and beverage stores sales, which were flat through the month, and grocery store sales, which were up 0.1%.
