MNI: EU To Set Out Options For Fiscal Reform Oct. 12 - Sources

(MNI) Brussels

The European Commission is tentatively planning publication of its long-awaited 'Communication' on fiscal rules reform on Oct 12, EU sources have told MNI. It is expected that the document will not make concrete proposals for overhauling limits on borrowing set out in the Stability and Growth Pact but will set out options for member state finance ministers to discuss over the autumn.

The Commission will put forward more concrete proposals in the spring of 2023 once it is clear what is politically feasible, one source said.

MNI has reported previously that only interpretative changes are likely to the SGP and that no legislative amendments will be proposed (See MNI: EU Steers Away From Big Changes To Debt Rules).
