MNI POLICY: China Signals Outbreak Easing as Xi Visits Wuhan

MNI (London)
BEIJING (MNI) - Chinese President Xi Jinping Tuesday visited Wuhan city in
Hubei province, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, signalling that the
top leadership is confident the situation on ground zero is now under control.
Xi visited the Huoshenshan hospital, built last month solely for the
purpose of treating those falling sick to the virus, and met with frontline
medical workers and residents, Xinhua News Agency reported.
On Monday, China reported 19 new COVID-19 cases, 17 deaths, and 36 new
suspected cases nationwide. Seventeen new cases were located in Wuhan, two new
cases were from overseas visitors, while no new cases of infections among
residents outside Hubei province was found for the third day, state media
reported.
The central task force on the epidemic met Monday and said the current
situation continues to improve, according to a statement on the government
website.
China must resolutely prevent a resurgence of the virus and increase
monitoring of those coming from abroad, according to the meeting.
As of Monday, total 69 new COVID-19 infections were carried by those who
came into China, the National Health Commission said.
