Today's Major COVID-19 Headlines And Latest Data

  • World Health Organization Director-Genera Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press conference on August 3 that there is no "silver bullet for COVID-19 at the moment and there might never be". This comes after warnings from the WHO that the pandemic will be "lengthy", with cases worldwide rising at a relatively steady pace and no guarantee of an effective vaccine despite expedited efforts to develop one.
  • One of the US' top medical advisers Dr Deborah Birx said on August 2 that the country was entering a "new phase" of its COVID-19 outbreak, with the disease "extraordinarily widespread" in both urban and rural areas, compared to initial outbreaks that were centred in large cities. Birx issued the warning "To everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected from this virus," with many new cases being recorded in less densely populated areas of the US west and south.
  • The BBC Persian service has claimed that documents it has obtained from an anonymous source show that the number of deaths from COVID-19 in Iran is almost three-times that put out in official government statistics. The leaked stats say just under 42,000 died from the disease up to July 20, compared to health ministry figures of 13,405, while the total number of infections on the leaked list is 451,024 compared to official numbers of 278,827. The health ministry has stated its reports to the WHO are "transparent" and "far from any deviations".
  • Global increase in cases (daily) – Yesterday: 1.3%. Seven-day average: 1.5%
  • Global increase in fatalities (daily) – Yesterday: 0.6%. Seven-day average: 0.9% (CORRECTION: Out of date case and fatality statistics submitted in original version).

MNI SOURCES: Pressure On ECB Seen Rising-Brussels Officials - European Union officials increasingly fear the bloc's economy will hit another air pocket as a Covid-19 resurgence hits earlier than expected, telling MNI that this could fuel calls for more European Central Bank QE despite a EUR750 billion pandemic recovery fund set to be legally finalised by the end of the year and disbursing funds by the second half of 2021.
