MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Global COVID-19 Tracker – Nov 11
COVID-19 Trends and Developments
- The average daily increase in cases globally across the past week stood at 563,087 cases per day on November 10, the highest seven-day average on record. Similarly, the average number of coronavirus-related fatalities registered globally across the last seven days hit a new high on November 10, with an average of 8,239 per day. The increase in cases is being driven largely by a sustained second wave of infections in the United States and Western Europe, as well as a first major wave of infections in Eastern Europe.
- The Netherlands recorded 4,667 new COVID-19 cases on November 10, the lowest one-day total since October 6. While the number of new cases is increasing at a slower rate, the number of fatalities continues to tick up with around a three week lag behind the initial spike in cases and a notable increase in fatalities. The average number of COVID-19 fatalities recorded in the Netherlands over the past week stood at 81 per day as of November 10.
- China's Sinovac coronavirus vaccine trials in Brazil were suspended on November 10 following the death of a triallist on October 29. Health regulator Anvisa reported what it called a 'severe adverse incident', but gave no other details. The head of the Butantan institute, which is administering the trials, said that the trial was stopped due to a death, but that the death was not due to the vaccine. President Jair Bolsonaro has previously criticised the trials and siad that his country will not purchase a Chinese-made vaccine.
