MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Global COVID-19 Tracker – Nov 13

COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • Several major economies recorded their highest number of new COVID-19 cases on November 12, with the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada all registering their highest 24 hour caseloads of the pandemic so far. In Canda the overall numbers remain relatively low, with 5,474 added to the total. However, in the US and the UK (increases of 153,496 and 33,470 respectively) the initial second wave spike is feeding through into escalating hospitalisations and fatalities that could result in harsher restrictions coming into force in the weeks ahead.
  • In Belgium the number of new positive coronavirus cases continues to decline, from a seven-day average peak of 17,802 per day on October 30, to an average of 5,865 per day in the week leading up to November 12. However, these numbers are likely suppressed by the government only offering tests to those who are symptomatic. The coronavirus-related fatalities continue to mount, with an average of 196 recorded per day over the week leading to November 12, just below the record weekly high of 205 per day registered on November 10.
  • Italy recorded its highest coronavirus fatality total since April 6 on November 12, with 636 COVID-19 related deaths registered across the country. The Italian government has a tiered system in place in an effort to control the virus while seeking to support the economy, with different regions placed in different tiered categories. Some senior medical figures have called for a nationwide lockdown to combat rising hospitalisation levels across the country.
