Morocco To Recognise Israel After US Agrees To  Claim On Western Sahara

MENA

US President Donald Trump tweets: "Today, I signed a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara. Morocco's serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal is the ONLY basis for a just and lasting solution for enduring peace and prosperity! Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations – a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East! Morocco recognized the United States in 1777. It is thus fitting we recognize their sovereignty over the Western Sahara."

  • Agreement makes Morocco the fourth MENA state this year (the others being the UAE, Bahrain, and Sudan) to recognise the state of Israel after mediation with the US.
  • The US recognition of the breakaway region of Western Sahara as part of Morocco is a major diplomatic move. The region, claimed as part of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) by the Polisario Front (the national liberation organisation of the SADR) has been the source of conflict for several decades.
