N. Korea Conducts Live-Fire Drills Near Maritime Border With South

NORTH KOREA

South Korea reiterated that the North conducted live-fire drills over the weekend, pushing back against Pyongyag's claims that the incident represented a "deceptive operation", Yonhap News Agency reports. The latest exercises represent a further escalation of existing tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

  • South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that the North fired shells into the waters off its West Coast, while also detonating explosives to simulate artillery fire and test its neighbour's detection capabilities.
  • JCS spokesperson Lee reaffirmed that North Korea's recent live-fire tests have effectively rendered maritime buffer zones established under a 2018 tension-reduction treaty non-existent.
  • Pyongyang fired around 350 shells since Friday, conducting its first live-fire drill near the maritime border since December 2022. The tests are believed to represent an attempt to take the lead in dictating the trajectory of inter-Korean tensions.
