National Assembly To Vote On Phala Phala Report
SOUTH AFRICA
- The National Assembly will today vote on whether to adopt the Section 89 report and launch impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa (click here to see the details of the procedure). The ruling African National Congress has the numbers to defend its leader, with its lawmakers occupying 57.5% of all seats. The Speaker's decision to reject requests for a secret ballot makes it easier for leaders to ensure that their MPs toe the party line. The ANC has instructed its lawmakers to vote against the report, yet News24 reported that some 42 ANC rebels were considering voting with the opposition even if the ballot was open. Parliament is due to start the debate at 1400SAST/1200GMT, with the vote set to take place thereafter, but the count may take several hours.
- Meanwhile, the ANC is preparing for its national elective conference, which will kick off later this week. As things stand, Ramaphosa is still expected to contest the top post, with the Phala Phala scandal exacerbating existing factional frictions.
- National energy regulator Nersa will discuss a 2023 electricity tariff hike later this week. It faces the task of striking a balance between Eskom's request for a larger increase and the squeeze on household budgets from elevated inflation.
