Netanyahu-No Halt To Electricity Supplied On Sabbath Under New Gov't

ISRAEL

Incoming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refuted claims that the inclusion of a number of far-right and religious parties will result in a number of Haredi measures implemented nationwide, such as a halt to electricity generation across the country on the Jewish Sabbath.

  • Speaking to the Knesset, Netanyahu states that, "There will be electricity on Shabbat, we will not become a Halachic state. We will maintain the status quo, a man of his faith will live. We were chosen to lead in our own way - a path of the national right, a path of the liberal right, and we will do so." "
  • Comes as Netanyahu seeks to install Likud MK Yariv Levin as temportary Knesset speaker, replacing incumbent Mickey Levy - an ally of outgoing PM Yair Lapid. This is seen as an important step in helping the incoming gov'ts legislative agenda once it comes to power.
  • In a fiery Knesset speech earlier, Lapid lambasted the public for voting in Netanyahu before turning his attention to the incoming PM, stating that he is "weak, and terrified of his trial," and that his agenda has been, "taken over by people younger than him, more extreme and determined than him." Went onto say that, "[Religious Zionist Party head] Smotrich and [Shas party leader] Deri control this government, Netanyahu is a junior partner."
